Qanat in Iran: These are underground tunnels that tap into aquifers and transport water to the surface without pumping. They are constructed with vertical shafts at regular intervals for maintenance and ventilation. They provide water for drinking, irrigation and cooling. They are an ancient technology that dates back to the first millennium BCE and are still in use in many arid regions of the world
