Aboriginal communities in Australia have used observational skills and environmental cues to anticipate and respond to earthquakes. For example, the Yolngu people of Arnhem Land have noticed that certain animals, such as crocodiles and birds, behave differently before an earthquake. They also use the direction and intensity of the wind, the color and shape of the clouds, and the sound and smell of the earth to sense impending earthquakes
