In Papua New Guinea the Singas people have a traditional practice of building raised houses on stilts to protect themselves and their belongings from floods and fires. They also use bamboo pipes to divert water from nearby streams to create sprinkler systems that can extinguish fires. They also have a traditional knowledge of fire ecology and fire indicators, such as the behavior of animals and plants, that help them to predict and prepare for fire events
